I entered the Textile program at Sheridan College on a bit of a whim. I came to the school for an Open House after being accepted into the Photography program and decided to take a short tour through the textile studio. Forgive me for being a little sentimental, but I suddenly realized that I belonged there. Seeing a space full of creative people making things was a total eye-opener for me. I didn't know people like me existed anywhere else! So I started in the program and was continually amazed at the community of like-minded people I was discovering through being in the program.
The three years I spent at Sheridan College were wonderful. Of course there were tears, minor mental breakdowns and massive amounts of stress, but it was wonderful nonetheless. I came in to the program as one of the youngest people in my class and I didn't really know what to expect. Through my time at Sheridan, I made some long-lasting friendships (again, forgive my sentimentality), learned a great deal about myself and what I can accomplish and gained confidence in my creative abilities.
Now three years later, I feel like I know what I'm doing. I've started a business and I'm currently obsessed with making naturally-dyed, printed and hand sewn canvas and leather hand bags. My time at Sheridan opened me up to the possibility that people will actually pay me to do the thing that I love the most-make things. It sounds simple, but it's pretty great.
Along with 6 of the ladies in my graduating class, I've rented a studio space in Hamilton, Ontario that we're turning into a textile printing/dyeing/sewing studio and we are so excited about it. I'm hoping to work full-time out of the studio and run my business, Hands&Feet handmade design. We're also planning to start a collective of sorts within the studio and host different events like craft fairs and pop-up shops as well as teaching classes out of our space. There are so many possible opportunities in our new space and we just can't wait to get it up and running!
Currently, I'm making Hands & Feet products, developing a product line and getting ready for a few craft shows and events this summer. I'm so exited about the future of this new venture and I can't wait to see what's in store for me next!
